Called to Serve, Grow, and Build Together

Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday, the Gospel invites us to reflect on Jesus’ important question: “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responds with faith, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15–16). Jesus then entrusts Peter with a special mission: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18), and gives him “the keys to the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19).

These words remind us that Jesus established His Church with a clear mission and entrusted different responsibilities to those who serve His people. In the first reading, God says of Eliakim, “I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder” (Isaiah 22:22).

The key is a sign of responsibility, trust, and service.

As Catholics, we are so blessed to belong to a Church where the Pope, Bishop, and Pastor have particular responsibilities in guiding and serving God’s people. The Pope, as the successor of St. Peter, serves the unity of the Universal Church. The Bishop shepherds the local Church entrusted to him, and the Pastor, under the Bishop’s authority, cares for and guides the parish community. His role is not simply to celebrate Mass. He has the responsibility to teach the faith, guide the parish community, care for the spiritual life of the people, and help the parish remain faithful to Christ and His Church.

This is why parish life works best when we understand the difference between having an opinion and having a responsibility with accountability. We may have different ideas about how something should be done. That is normal. But once the Church has given responsibility to a pastor or another legitimate leader, we are called to cooperate respectfully with the pastor and work for the good of the whole community.

These responsibilities are gifts of service. Each of us also has an important part to play in the life of our parish. When we listen, cooperate, encourage one another, and generously share our time and talents, we help our parish grow stronger in faith and love.

St. Paul reminds us to remain humble before the wisdom of God: “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Romans 11:33). We may each have different gifts and ideas, but we can always choose to work together with patience, understanding, and a spirit of unity.

A joyful and vibrant parish is built by everyone. Some teach, some organize, some care for our church and grounds, some welcome others, some give generously, and many offer their prayers. Every act of service makes a difference, and every person has something valuable to contribute.

Our Parish Picnic on August 23 is a beautiful opportunity to celebrate this spirit of togetherness. Let us come with joyful hearts, meet someone new, welcome others, thank those who serve, and enjoy the gift of being part of our parish family.

As we gather, let us remember that we are one parish family of St. John XXIII, united in Christ. By supporting one another, sharing our gifts, and working together, we can continue to build a parish that is intentionally welcoming, faithful, and filled with hope.

May Christ guide our Pope Leo, Bishop Robert Gruss, Pastor, and all who serve our parish. May He bless each of you and inspire us to serve with generous hearts and joyful spirits

God bless you and your families. I look forward to celebrating with you at our Parish Picnic on August 23!

Questions for Reflection This Week

1. How can I better appreciate and support the responsibilities entrusted by Christ to the Pope, Bishop, and Pastor?

2. How can I grow in a spirit of cooperation, patience, and unity within our parish community?

3. What time, talent, or simple act of kindness can I joyfully offer to strengthen and serve our parish family?
