World Day for Grandparents
and the Elderly 2026
“I will never forget you”

As we celebrate the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on July 26, we give thanks to God for the important gift and mission of grandparents in our families and communities. Grandparents are not only keepers of family memories; they are guardians of faith, sources of wisdom and witnesses of God’s love. Through their prayers, presence, and example, they continue to have an important role in guiding younger generations.
In his message for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly 2026, Pope Leo XIV reminds us of God’s promise: “I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15). These words bring hope to grandparents and remind you that your lives continue to have purpose. Even in times of change, uncertainty or difficulty, the Almighty loving God remains close to you and invites you to continue sharing the gifts you have received.
Today, many grandparents carry a concern in their hearts: they see some children and grandchildren becoming distant from God or the Church, attending Mass less often, or searching for meaning in places that do not always bring true peace. Yet this concern should not lead to discouragement. Instead, grandparents are called to be signs of hope. Their witness of faith, patience and love can become a quiet invitation for younger generations to rediscover the beauty of a relationship with God.
The readings for Sunday remind us of the treasures that truly matter. In the First Reading, Solomon asks God for “an understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:9) so that he may lead others with wisdom. Grandparents are also invited to ask God for wisdom: the wisdom to listen, to understand the struggles of younger generations, and to share faith with compassion rather than judgment.
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of the “treasure hidden in a field” and the “pearl of great price” (Matthew 13:44-46). Many young people today are searching for purpose, belonging and hope. Grandparents can help them discover that the greatest treasure is found in knowing that they are loved by God. Through simple conversations, family prayers, sharing personal faith stories and living the Gospel values of kindness and forgiveness, grandparents can help reveal the beauty of faith.
St. Paul reminds us that “all things work together for good for those who love God” (Romans 8:28). Grandparents know that faith is a journey. They have experienced moments of joy and struggle, but they have learned that God remains faithful. Their lives can show younger generations that faith is not simply a tradition passed down, but a source of strength, hope and true meaning.
The role of grandparents today is more important than ever. Their presence at the Sports events to encourage their grandchildren has been playing a great role in their lives. They can become bridges between generations by listening to the curious questions of young people, encouraging them in their search for truth, praying for them, and showing through their lives that God’s love is real. They may not always have the opportunity to speak about faith directly, but their example of prayer, generosity, forgiveness and trust in God can speak powerfully and effectively.
May grandparents continue to embrace their calling as witnesses of faith and hope. May they never lose heart but continue to plant seeds of faith in the hearts of their children and grandchildren, trusting that God can bring new life from those seeds in His own time.
